Spirit Airlines continues to be bogged down by cancellations: Travel Weekly

Spirit Airlines continued its operational struggles on Tuesday. 

As of 12:30 p.m. Eastern Time, the ultralow-cost carrier had canceled 112 flights for the day, according to FlightAware, which is 16% of its Tuesday schedule. The figures are substantially improved from Monday, when Spirit canceled 35% of its scheduled flights. 

The problems continue to be residual effects from disruptive weather and air traffic control delays over the weekend in Spirit’s home base of Florida.

In its most recent statement, issued Monday, the carrier said that it expected to move toward normal operations in the following few days. 

“Spirit has a very large presence in Florida, with hundreds of flights touching the state each day. It takes time to get our crews and planes back into place after multiple days of weather and restrictions,” the carrier said. 

Other airlines have more or less recovered from a weekend that brought more than 4,000 U.S. airline flight cancellations between Friday and Sunday.

JetBlue, which was still working to reset its network on Monday, canceling 13% of flights, has canceled just 1% of its Tuesday schedule, according to FlightAware.
